Why does white foam appear in the pool water?

26 March, 2024

We are in the heights of the summer when the pools have been used very frequently. Therefore, after a few months of use, we can perceive some change in the appearance of the pool water.

Foam in the pool is one of these alterations. At first glance, you can think of them as simple air bubbles. However, these bubbles that fill the pool are not just air but dissolved organic matter that causes the water to thicken and can become uncomfortable for the swimmer.

There are different causes, but the most common are chemical imbalances, high levels of organic products or a low level of calcium in the water.

First of all, when it comes to chemical imbalances, it is possible that at some point the pool is not balanced as it should be. There are times when we add too many chemicals or simply choose to buy cheaper ones that may not meet the pool’s requirements.

Second, high levels of organic products can come from both hair care products like shampoo or hairspray, body lotions like gel, deodorant, or makeup, and even laundry detergent. These are substances that we use for our care, but that the trace left in the water can be harmful.

Finally, the low levels of calcium hardness, which lead to too soft water that facilitates the formation of white foam.

How to fix or prevent it?

Once the main causes of white foam in the pool are known, we see that it does not mean that good care of the pool is not taken, but certain measures must be taken to avoid the excessive accumulation of this substance.

The most basic, simple, and essential measure is to go through the shower before getting into the pool water. In this way, we get rid of all these products that can damage water. It must be considered that there are many people who enter a swimming pool throughout the summer, and that all of us, involuntarily and unconsciously, are part of the causes of the creation of the foam, so we must be aware and shower well before we get into the pool.

Also, we will have to frequently check that the water is balanced. In the case of detecting that the levels are not optimal, we must balance it according to the characteristics and needs of each pool.
