Truths and myths of saline chlorination

28 September, 2020

The maintenance of water in public and private swimming pools through electrolysis has become popular in recent years. However, along with its rise, doubts have begun to arise about how it works and its benefits. In the following entry, we expose the different truths and myths that exist about salt chlorination:

  • Salt chlorination is a more natural cleaning process.

TRUE. To keep swimming pool water free of bacteria and microorganisms, the traditional cleaning method is the use of chemicals such as chlorine. However, the process of maintaining the water in swimming pools is carried out through electrolysis, which uses natural chlorine that is present in common salt. This cleaning process is, then, more natural since there is no need to add other chemicals.

  • It is a sustainable pool water maintenance system

TRUE. The water maintenance system through electrolysis is a more sustainable process in relation to traditional methods, since the salt that is added to the water is continuously reused. In addition, the salt chlorinators from BSPool are created in such a way that energy consumption is lower.

  • It is a process suitable for all types of pools

TRUE. The salt chlorination equipment is suitable for any type of pool: tile, polyester or liner.

  • Salt chlorination is safe for pool users

TRUE. By putting aside the use of chemicals such as chlorine to maintain pool water, effects such as skin and eye irritation can be avoided. Also, by using salt to carry out this process, strong and unpleasant chlorine odours disappear.

  • The water in the pool becomes salty like the sea

FALSE. The salt chlorination process is carried out with low concentrations of salt; for this reason, the sensation of bathing in salt water becomes imperceptible.

  • It is a system that deteriorates the facilities and their surroundings

FALSE. As we mentioned before, the concentration of salt in the water is very low (less than 10%), so the pool facilities are not affected, as well as the vegetation that may exist in its surroundings.

  • The equipment is difficult to install

FALSE. The installation process of the salt chlorination equipment is simple. To do this, the chlorinator should only be placed in the return pipe of the pool. In this way, the water will pass through the cell and the electrolysis process will begin. In addition, to install the equipment it will not be necessary to carry out any type of work on the pool. At BSPool we have a wide network of experts and technical service available to answer any questions about the installation of our equipment.

You can check the following video to see the installation process of our EVO BASIC chlorinator.

  • There is no need to carry out maintenance follow-up

FALSE. Despite the fact that salt chlorination is a water cleaning process that is always in operation and does not require constant maintenance by an expert, it is important to bear in mind that there are elements of electrolysis that have to be checked with some frequency. The pH levels in the water and the cleanliness of the chlorinator cell are key elements for the electrolysis process to be carried out correctly.

At BSPool we seek to create saline chlorination products that keep pool water clean without the use of chemical products. Through electrolysis, and with a slight concentration of common salt, the optimal maintenance process will be carried out for each user.
